Christmas in Shipshewana

Holiday Light Parade & Tree Lighting Ceremony

November 8, 2014

The "Colors of Christmas" Lighted Parade will begin at dusk (6pm). The parade will wander through downtown Shipshewana and end in front of the Blue Gate Restaurant. Not only will there be the traditional tree lighting ceremony but there will be carolers singing Christmas tunes and Santa will be at the Hitching Post after the parade if you wish to visit with the Jolly Old Elf. Last year over 4,500 guests lined the streets and the porches of the Blue Gate Restaurant to watch this wonderful event. The spectacular floats, carolers, horses and wagons that made their way through town were a wonder to all. The holidays are not that far off, so come get a large dose of spirit and jump start your holiday season with a blast of color and light! Shipshewana Ice Festival

December 26, 2014 - December 27, 2014

After Christmas but while the out-of-town family and friends are still visiting, come and enjoy watching ice chips fly!

Professional Ice Carvers drill, chip, shave, saw and blow bits of ice all over Shipshewana as they create beautiful sculptures. The sculptures that are created on Friday, December 26th will be designs that have either been requested from the ice block sponsor or ones that are from the creative minds of the professional carvers. The carvers love the challenge of taking a block of ice and turning it into a masterpiece! So come and watch the ice chips fly!

Then on Saturday, December 27th, more ice chips will be flying as the professional carvers compete for 3 cash prizes. This competition allows the carvers to show just how creative you can be with a block of ice and a few tools. Bring your cameras and record the ice sculptures coming to life right before your eyes.

Chili Cook Off

This yummy event is held under the tent in the parking lot of the Davis Mercantile and is only a few feet away from the ice carving competition. This way you can watch the ice chips fly as the professional carvers turn blocks of ice into beautiful sculptures and sample some steaming, hot chili at the same time. Inside of the tent, there will be a wide variety of chili being served by the down home folks who made it. From spicy hot, to mild and sweet, sausage chili, white chili, turkey chili, to venison chili, this event is a chili lovers dream! Approximately 15 to 2- fun loving cooks will prepare, tweak and fuss over large batches of chili until it’s just right! They are all sure that their “secret recipe” is the one that will walk away with one of the 3 prizes. The public will be voting by distributing their 3 tickets amongst the chili cooks.

It will cost $5 at the tent to sample all the chili that your stomach can hold from 10:00am until 3:00pm. Or you can use your 2014 Ice Festival Pin, which has been designed by a Westview High School Student and sold at participating Shipshewana merchants, to get FREE admission to the Chili Cook Off Tent along with multiple discounts throughout Shipshewana during the month of January 2015. Don't worry if you haven't purchased your Ice Festival Pin; you may purchase yours at the Chili Cook Off tent for $15 the day of the cook off.
